New Labor Market Trends in British Columbia and Canada

Free Career Counselling Tips

2020 changed the labor markets and those changes are staying.

For job seekers, and employers the landscape is different. In some ways, it is drastically different.

Here are some of the new labor market trends for 2021.

Remote Work will be a Fixture Moving Forward

53% of workers say their jobs can be completed remotely in a successful way for their industries. (28 Need-To-Know Remote Work Statistics Of 2020, n.d.) In another study, one-third of those surveyed stated that they always work remotely. As 2021 rolls on we will see the vaccine become more widely available. This will lead to some industries requiring employees to return for on-site work, but a substantial amount of positions will remain remote.

Hiring could see a slow down as employers find it more difficult to gauge the work ethic of employees with remote jobs. It’s reported that 75% of applications aren’t even looked at, but that shouldn’t be a deterrent to applying. If you’re applying online, you should expect to apply to more jobs than you would have in the past.

Social Media has Never Been More Important.

Currently, almost anyone can be found online. The results that are presented when your name is searched online are just as important as what your resume says about you.

Companies use social media to vet potential hires, so you want to make sure that yours is a good reflection of who you are!

72% of recruiters use LinkedIn and those recruiters use other platforms as well, with as many as 60% of recruiters using Facebook to vet potential employees. You don’t need to become a marketing whiz and promote yourself, but you should be aware of what your online presence says about you as a person and as a potential employee.

Industries with increase and decrease to hiring

  • Transportation
  • Utilities
  • Warehousing

The three industries above have experienced the greatest increase in hiring throughout the pandemic.

Those four industries experienced the greatest decrease in hiring throughout the pandemic. Hospitality, Retail, and Tourism are among the job markets that are included in those four industries

Pay is increasing, not decreasing

Average hourly earnings experienced a 3.2% increase, seasonally adjusted, from October 2019 to October 2020 – per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Usually, Canada follows the same trend.

Supply and demand control salaries. If there are more qualified and experienced job seekers in one market and many of them are looking for the same job as you, this could reduce the salary. The same is true of the opposite, and the industries that are experiencing the most growth and increases in hiring rates will see pay increases.

What can you do?

The best strategy is to be as prepared as possible. While you are actively seeking out jobs that are hiring, keep an eye on positions that you are qualified for, or that you are striving for. Even if those aren’t available, keep your name fresh in the mind of recruiters.

In the meantime, skill updating can improve your career prospects. Interest is growing for short-term, skills-based online credentials that are tied to a career.
