The Counselling Internship is a part-time unpaid opportunity offered at Sandstone Counselling Centre. The program runs from September to April each academic year. The Internship begins with a full week of orientation and 2.5-3 days per week of training. Training includes approximately 8-10 direct client service hours per week, which results in approximately 500-600 hours of field experience in a Counselling setting.
Summary:
Internship Structure:
- 500-600 hours
- 2.5 – 3 days per week (16-20 hours per week) from September – April
- orientation week (at beginning of Internship)
Counselling Internship Hours:
8-10 session hours of Direct Client Service per week
- Individual Counselling
- Group Counselling/Facilitation
- Consultations
5-7 hours per week
- Case management
- Consultations with professionals
- Audio/Video recording review
- Resource research, reading and session preparation
- Preparation for group
- Professional Development
- Other on-site Internship Activities
1-4 hours per week of Clinical Supervision including:
- Case consultation
- Group supervision (possible)
- Directly Observed Practice (see below)
- File review
Totals include:
- 25 hours of Directly Observed Practice (direct observation of sessions, review of video/audio taped sessions, co-counselling, or co-facilitating)
Not included:
- 20 Hours of Group Sessions (psycho-educational or therapeutic groups)
- This will need to be arranged by the Practicum student and arranged off-site (the group component is not available at this time)
- It is possible to arrange this through Sandstone, but it is not currently included as part of the program.
Internship Design
This Internship is designed for the self-directed learner. We provide a site in which the Student will thrive with an inquisitive learning style. There are numerous opportunities for additional learning (readings, researching topics, and developing programs).
Clinical Supervision is provided by the primary Site Supervisor, Catherine Cloutier. Catherine is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors and is in good standing. She received her Masters’ in Counselling 2003 and has been successfully practicing since that time.
