How to Survive the Age Of COVID
How to Survive the Age Of COVID
In the wake of the COVID-19 global pandemic, the labor market has endured a drastic shift—one that has spilled over heavily into how people search for jobs. With the introduction of more frequent remote opportunities, and at times mandatory remote positions, the way people will go about looking for a job and completing the required tasks of the said job are set to be quite different moving forward.
With remote positions now becoming more prevalent, this means that competition will be fiercer than ever. Now that location will not be an issue for many jobs, more and more qualified applicants will be vying for the job. People who were once too far away to be considered are now suddenly possible candidates to fill the position.
Being able to show that you can set yourself apart from the pack and offer unique talents or skills, or more refined talents or skills will be, perhaps, more crucial now than it ever has been. Applicants must be able to show their skills via providing concrete data or examples, instead of just voicing their ability to perform required functions and roles.
Remote interview processes, such as Zoom calls, will a leaned upon method moving forward. Online interviews or meetings performed through Zoom, Google Group, and other similar methods were once thought of as niche or potentially more ‘upscale’ processes, but now those will become something close to the norm. Expect to be participating in these more and more as time goes on, and this increase in presence will only grow as the future becomes the present.
Now that many people are at home and applying for jobs online, companies have seen a massive increase in online applications. The importance of knowing someone, having a foot in the door, or being able to network accordingly is on the rise. Being in touch with someone who can move your application ahead or personally recommend you for a job has never been more beneficial than it is right now. This new landscape will shift into valuing that as an even greater necessity than it already is.
While the location of an applicant might no longer be the concern it once was, the availability of remote positions also introduces a unique opportunity for applicants that can perform on-site work. The ability and availability to be on-sight will become a more valued asset of a worker or applicant. Some jobs are still more appropriate for on-sight work, or the position could potentially be performed better by an on-sight worker. Applicants that can offer this traditional perk to their being hired will find that this once expected and required function will now become an extra benefit they can offer.
The future is now and as more markets and industries adapt to the changing landscape, applicants must also adapt in equal, and often greater means.
